Weblister Homepage

Hi all,

I have not written in quite a while so i thought i would say another hello to everyone and cover a important topic.

I have a website, should I start a blog?

The answer to this really depends on the type of website you are, do you have time to manage a separate blog, will the blogs you post on there be interesting to other people and therefore gain traffic?

If you have answered yes to the two questions above then you can start a blog.

What platform should i use for my blog?

When i talk about a platform there are lots of different providers that all offer programs you can make your blog with. Eg wordpress, blogger, blog, blogspot etc… You have to find what program best suits your needs. I am using wordpress, this can be found at wordpress.com, I use this in conjunction with my website, which basically means i have attached it to my website and all my posts and traffic directly affect my website address. You should also make sure the blog program you get is a good one because if they were to go down the pan then so would your blog and all that hard work would VANISH

This is GOOD because i want to get more TRAFFIC to my website. So basically, once you have added your wordpress on to your website (you can normally do this through your control panel, Or get your web designer to do it, Or phone me and i will do it for a small fee) You will be able to start. First thing is first, WordPress offers LOTS of different themes, and a lot of these are free of charge, have a look through some of their themes and decide on what you like, don’t base too much importance on this to start off with.

Next you need to make sure all your updates on wordpress are up to date, on the top left of your control panel the updates will normally be listed here. Then you will need to set up your categories, just one or two for the moment will be fine. Then after that have a think about what you would like to post, bear in mind what you think useful other people may not always think is useful, I have a few different posts on my website and some have got lots of posts on them and some have none.

I have made my first post what should i do now?

After you have made your first post you will have to wait, although the good thing about blog sites is the blogs that are posted on them are almost real time, which basically means if you posted something and it was popular enough it could be listed in search engines in a matter of hours. This is not always the case and either your website would have to be high profile or your subject extremely attractive. EG if you was a main News station and you was posting information on Gaddafi in Libya’s whereabouts then it would be a very small matter of time before the search engines would index it, if it was one lonely little blog it probably would not carry quite so much weight.

Anyway if your post is a good post and people like what you have put there and you allow people to post on there freely comments or feedback you will start to see in your wordpress control panel comments starting to pop up for you to authorise. This is the interesting part.

Is the comment genuine or is it a Spammer
When i first set up my blog i started getting some comments on there, quite a few and i was thinking oh this is good, i am happy with these posts, but you will start to see duplicate posts of exactly the same posts, this is because you have approved a spammers comment, don’t get worried that you have done this because although it can be a pain if you let it it can be a blessing in disguise. You have several options;

You can either set your status to only allow signed in users, (don’t do this as you won’t get any traffic)

You can spam all the posts you know are rubbish, (the ones advertising human tasting dog food, vaginal dryness treatment, I’ll create a longer opinion later) but there is one problem, to spam these does not block them????!!! WHAT? I hear you say, WordPress say it is to help them develop spam tools for their users, that’s all very well but how does it help you?

WordPress offer various Spam plug-ins that block these people from keep spamming you but you have to pay and it is not 100% foolproof

What would you suggest to block the spammers?

Although all these techniques are valid in one way or another i would suggest doing what i have done. When you get a message come through and you know it is rubbish, open up another separate window and load up your wordpress control panel, then on the left go to settings and discussion, then if you scroll down to comment blacklist this is where you can (AUTO BLOCK / SPAM) people manually i would highly recommend it, you can put either the users content, name, url, email or IP address in here, if you know it’s rubbish put it in here, i have had a lot of posts with bits in the text saying “Youre so cool, I’ll create a longer opinion later, Love the feel of your website” These are rubbish.

Why should i take the time to manually block the spammers
Although it is a bit long winded it will filter out all the rubbish being posted onto your blog. But just remember, for a spammer to put something on your blog he has to visit it, and if he visits your blog he is visiting your website as it is attached and what does that mean, TRAFFIC to your website although they drive me mad posting rubbish to my website, i would prefer to do the long winded manual method that will allow me to:
1: Spam their message automatically
2: Gain their visit as traffic
3: I can concentrate on approving the comments actually posted to my blog and not rubbish
4: I can be happy in the knowledge i am getting one over the spammers and knowing they are not getting the link and i am getting their traffic points

Why or how do these people spam your blog?
I am not a 100% sure how they do it, i would suggest they use a script which tests your blog to see if they can post a link and it get approved, once it is approved then your blog page may go to some kind of whitelist which other spammers have access to, once they have this then they use their script or program to automatically post to your blog using various pre-determined text either creating a positive/negative opinion about your blog which is so general you wouldn’t believe it, i have had people stating my “computer just died i am so happy i have now found your blog again” where you think it is harmless, but when you have 20 posts of this over 2 months you realise it is phoney.

How many more visits can a blog gain me
My blog has gained my website a LOT of visits, My website is now a pagerank 1 in google, this is also due to hardwork and i would never rely on just a blog as it is still only a small percentage and more just numbers to your website then anything else.

I would say that a blog can gain you a lot of traffic though dependant on your posts being a good subject matter that people will comment on. I would say that a good blog with around 6-7 very good posts can gain around 600 visits per month alone.

I hope you have enjoyed my post and look forward to reading all your comments.

Web design and search engine optimisation, based in southend on sea, essex

For any of you that are out there that wish to advertise their business with QYPE, please read this first. This is an actual factual event that has happened to me, i feel grossly outdone by QYPE and that they have used dirty rotten tactics to get a sale from me.

I was listing my website with search directories and Qype comes up in this listing, so i listed for a free listing, i then received a phone call the next day from a sales rep, he was trying to get me to agree to a premium listing. I was asking do i get links back to my website, he was saying yes you do, he was saying how many people search for my search terms each day and that i am bound to get business. At this time i was thinking it may be a good idea, i asked what it would cost me to have a page for web design essex and all surrounding areas in essex, around 30 towns give or take a few, he said he could do it for £90 a month including vat, so i thought well, what have i got to lose, i asked at this stage, if it doesn’t work for me can i cancel at anytime, he said yes. I repeated this question 4 times in this conversation and at each time he said yes you can cancel when you wish, so i thought ok, lets go for it, he emailed me through something, then phoned me and said i have emailed you through terms and conditions to accept, can you go to the email now, so i did and he said just click the link and we can get started, i was keen to get my business listed as i thought it was great.

So there you go i was all set up, you could see my website there, i was checking each day, little or no visits to my site on Qype or to my website. So after the first month had passed i was getting a little accepting to the fact it was not for me, i emailed my sales rep and he said he has just been on holiday and has only just got back, probably a stalling tactic, anyway, he tried by emails to talk me out of it, and i said no i wish to cancel, so he sent me through an email saying you are signed up to a 12 month contract and you cannot leave it until 6 months into it, at this time i was outraged, i emailed him and said he is a lyar, he stated he read me the terms and i said no you have not, but it was his words against mine, i asked to speak to his manager, i got him on the phone, tried to talk me round not leaving and then i let rip at him too, but his response is it’s in the terms and conditions and my sales rep would never of said that, i asked to they keep recordings of their conversations, do they? NO!

I had another person from the client services department call me, i said i am cancelling my payment to them and they will never see money from me, they said i am on a b2c contract and i am obligated by the terms, i posted my problem to a few law forums and they have stated i probably could not get out of it as it is contracted and that the sales rep saying i could cancel at anytime would not stand in court as it is their word against mine.

I have no conceded that unfortunately i cannot win against the lowlifes of QYPE who the sales manager deserves to be sacked and i re-iterated that to the client services person as he used dirty tactics and lied just so he could line his pockets with my money as his commision.

Needless to say i am completling my contract with Qype and paying the full amount for the 6 months, but if any business reads this, PLEASE consider my dealings first hand and don’t get caught out with their sales pitch, honestly for the mistake i have made i am now paying, if i can deter others from making the same mistake as i did i will be happy with that.

UPDATE 4th August 2011 **********************

CANCELLATION CLAUSE IN QYPE CONTRACT FOR PREMIUM LISTING 12 MONTH CONTRACT
Anyone that has signed up and has been stitched up by the scoundrels Qype – There is an apparent GET OUT CLAUSE that no one from qype tells you about, apart from one nice person i spoke to from qype who either has had enough of me contacting them or generally feels sorry for me. In your temrs and conditions in the contract under the following point:

4.10
Money back guarantee (only for Premium Partner registered by telephone). Qype Ltd guarantees the number of five hundred (500) Guaranteed Potential Customers (GPC) for their Premium Partner product over the term of 12 months, failure to reach the Guaranteed Potential Customers purchased over the term of the contract will lead to a full refund. This means that your Business will be seen a minimum of 500 times.

It states if at the end of your 12 month contract you have not had 500 visits to your Qype website profile (Qype premium page) at the end of the contract you can get your entire subscription refunded to you.

I could not quite get over this, and i am still not sure whether to pay until the end of the contract a further £500 at the risk of getting back the full £1000 or them just ignoring me, i have it in writing from the guy in client services but everything else qype has said has been lies and they will probably do me over for it.

Has anyone else ever received a refund from qype, I have 2 instalments left and am not far away from being able to issue my 6 months notice. But just unsure on: Lose £500, or risk another £500 to receive £1000 back (But wait till the end of the 12 month contract – and on their say so they will give me the money back)

I am still just contemplating, In Black and white, Trust them????!!!!

CANCELLATION PROCEDURES AT 5 MONTHS FOR END OF CONTRACT AT 6 MONTHS
Give them the notice when they ask for it, by emailing to clientservices@qype.com, they told me an email is enough, keep a copy of it, cancel your card, i cancelled my credit card and started BACS’ing the money to them

If anyone wishes to contact me in regards to this please don’t hesitate

New To The Web Design Business?

Weblister Home Page

If you are thinking about starting in the web design business and you are a completely new business venture I would urge you to read this first.

I take it you are completely trained up in web design and reasonably competent with dreamweaver, css, photoshop flash & fireworks. Because if your not you will probably need to go back and get trained up on all of these.

So, You have your website, you probably have a couple of pages on it, index / homepage, special offers, map, business, prices, maybe terms and conditions etc. This is a good start. But if that is it then you are not going to get very far. Websites nowadays are not 4-5 page little websites, some are 50-100 pages big. This is for content.

I’ll break it down, If you are going into a competitive market and you wish to sell web design to your average joe bloggs in your local region, chances are getting seen is not going to be easy. The reasons for this are, when people are looking for a said web design website in their search engine, what do they search for? “Web design” if you are lucky and you live in an area which you wish to market for say London, they might type into said search engine “web design london”

For either of the above two searches

Web design – searched 5,000,000 times a month globally

Web design London – searched 40,500 times a month globally

As you can see from results above it is extremely difficult to get straight into web design. Owning a website is a laborious task. You need to ensure your content is unique, high in keywords, research your keywords thoroughly, back links, You will need to get back links to your website. THIS IS NOT EASY. This will be by far your most time consuming project and the most frustrating.

My advice, pay somebody else to do it, unless you have serious, very serious amounts of time on your hands. Every time you go to a site to submit a link, for about 100 submissions you will get on average 5 links back. Not the easiest job in the world. But hey, after all the work you have a list of all different websites that successfully link to you and can exclude all the baddies. Seriously though:

  1. Get Software – Do it yourself, Make sure you have several days of around 3-4 hours a day for about 2 months
  2. Pay an SEO company to do it, We do special offers on back-links on our website.
  3. If you don’t have either time, staying power and stubbornness, Don’t even start.

Once you have your website set up & optimised (I would hope highly), your links in place. You are in a position to start. Don’t get disheartened if you do not get lots of business to start off with, unless you have a port-folio of work / websites to show off to visitors then it will take time.

You need to ensure you do the best possible job you can on each website you work on, Ensure on each website you do you place a link on each page back to your website. And the more customers you have the better it will be in the long run.

If you have done the SEO on a website, Shout about it!

We have two of our websites where the SEO has been done organically, and organically ONLY, no extra links other then from our website and they are sitting on page 1 of google under their represented keywords!

Click on this link and see the two websites where we say they are

Hi All,

Weblister Home Page

Weblister here,

Today’s topic, Page Rank & Google.

Although page rank is not the absolute answer to search engine optimisation it is a very important factor, If you look online at the search terms you wish to rank high for i can guarantee you that the pages that rank above your terms are either paying for the privalege OR they have a higher page rank.

Among different techniques you can use are the following:

Backlinks – Links to your site are extremely important
Blogs – To have a blog always providing new content
Sitemap – Ensuring you keep this up to date
Content – The search engines wish to know that your site is offering new and relevant content
Posting to Forums & Blogs – Post often, put in good content, and get a link back to your website!
Submit your own articles to submission sites with links back to your website

Weblister thinks this site is a very informative site

I have had to date 3 comments on WordPress plug in’s. They seem fantastic things to use. Obviously they are plug-ins you have to purchase.

What do you guys think on this subject?

Have any of you purchased a wordpress plug in for back links?

Which ones did you purchase?

How much increase in traffic did you have?

Are they ethical?

Did they increase business?

It would be fantastic to know your views on this subject.

Weblister may be trying out in the future for some testing so we can report back to our users.

Some of the plug in’s we have been informed of so far are:
seopressor.com
$47 one off – one site or $97 one off – multi site

wpbacklinks.net
$37 a month

http://automaticbacklinkcreator.com

Currently weblister is creating location pages to see how well they rank in google. This is a good way of getting your website seen, increasing your prospects of being seen in different towns and generally having more keywords to be found with.

So far it is working well and there will soon be more pages posted on the website. Current searches working well are Southend, Maldon, Colchester & Chelmsford for web design and search engine optimisation.

Many thanks

Some people ask me how hard is it to get into web design, I tell them the best way to go about getting into being a web designer is to look for web design courses. With web design it is very important to learn the basics first. What HTML is what CSS is, how to control different things on your webpage. It certainly is not the easiest thing in the world to do, you have to be computer literate, smart with computers, have patience and most importantly have time. Web design takes so much time.

After your courses are under your belt, you should have a basic concept of dreamweaver & photoshop. These programs are a godsend, i also use fireworks. After that you have to try to develop something. Try to imagine something you really feel passionate about and you want people to see.

I have 2-3 idea’s i would like to do but i just do not have the time to get into the projects. Importantly, when you do your first site, you will look at it and say, that looks good. To be truthful, It probably looks good because you put your hard effort into it, but really, you’ll come back to it later and think, no it doesn’t. Trust me i did with my first work, and people tell you yeah it’s good. LOL, why was i getting no work.

You have to experience work really, to use trial and error, read the web design magazines, they offer fantastic ideas. Then go back to your web site and say i want to try that. Then after you have re-done your website 16 times over you may have something that is ok.

In web design, the hardest thing is getting work, there are so many imaginative web designers out there who have fantastic works of art. But web design is not about art. Did you know that all the web sites with fancy art take up so much space on the web page that the search engines can’t always read the text. your front page in web site design is the most important page of your site. What do you have on there? A whacking great picture, a massive flash video, pictures with text embedded on it? these may look good, but they are unsearchable on google.

Getting work is as i said the hardest thing, you have to sell yourself, sell your product and be willing to work for it. Spending hours on something only to rip it apart and start again. The search engine and your search terms are the hardest animal you will have to tame. Do you advertise? do you buy links? what do you do to advertisie your site?

The questions of a web designer’s mind.

Strange thing that
